This is the hard cover Teacher Edition to the Science Fusion The Dynamic Earth textbooks. It has all the text information from the student workbook, but expands beyond that with answers to student workbook questions as well as classroom advice for teachers.

I have never written a curriculum review before. However, I am writing this review here because Houghton Mifflin Harcourt doesn't seem to have any way to contact a product manager with feedback via their web site. Maybe, just maybe, the product manager for Science Fusion will read this. And I do so want to provide some feedback both for the benefit of HMH as well as for administrators and parents who are considering using this product.

(My background: I am a homeschooling parent of a sixth grader - homeschooling not for religious or social reasons but due to temporary living arrangements in a very remote part of the country. I have a master's degree and have taught at the university level.)

The Science Fusion print textbooks/interactive workbooks are FANTASTIC. They are absolutely captivating with their photos and other graphics. These books make science engaging for kids, and the content is more challenging than other texts I have seen for middle school students. I am absolutely pleased with Modules E and F and plan to order other modules this year and next. The authors are well-credentialed, and the sources are reliable. This is a modern, visually appealing, HIGH quality science curriculum presented with graphics and interactive features that help kids actually learn the science rather than memorizing terms.

HOWEVER, administrators, parents, or committees thinking of adopting this program should be aware that the web site for this program is incredibly frustrating. The platform is via ThinkCentral. I can honestly say I have never used a more tedious, difficult web site for anything related to learning. If I worked for ThinkCentral I would be embarrassed. There is nothing intuitive about the web site. The labels for links are not self explanatory (example: "labs" are called something like "inquiry resources"). Exam questions are located in one location; answers are in another; answers to lesson questions are in yet another location. The web site uses too many flash features, and it is not set up with any "BACK" buttons, so if you click on the wrong link, you have to go back to the beginning of your search and start over to find the materials you need. Furthermore, all of the online resources are presented in both English and Spanish. You can select to view the English-only or Spanish-only resources, but this feature doesn't work. So every time you want to locate a resource, you have to wade through double the materials. If I am lucky enough to locate the labs and exams, I print them right away just in case I should lose them again forever.

Sometimes I find it quicker to read the chapter myself and try to answer the questions than to locate the correct answers online. A print assessment guide is available, so theoretically teachers could avoid using the web site altogether. However, the assessment guide is NOT available for homeschooling parents to purchase. (I don't know why it's not - perhaps HMH doesn't trust homeschooling parents? Other companies sell their assessment guides to parents.)

I LOVE this science series and think it has so many benefits for classrooms and homeschooling parents. But it's clear ThinkCentral and HMH did not thoroughly product-test the web site with focus groups to get their feedback. I think this is a shame, because this has the potential to be an outstanding product.

ScienceFusion Teacher Edition Grades 68 Module E The Dynamic Earth 2012 HOLT MCDOUGAL Books Reviews

While this Florida Fusion science textbook series are excellent - probably the best out of all the other Science Textbook series,
it is really frustrating to know that we, overseas parents, have no way of purchasing the Teacher's Edition.

Be the parent home-schooling or sending his/her kid to an international school in a Hermit Kingdom or a Third World dungeon school,
an overseas parent does need the teacher's edition to better teach or help his/her kid.

Occasionally, I could encounter a seller dealing with international shipping. But most sellers are only doing domestic shipping.
I guess the ever-growing demand for American Science Textbooks must be accompanied by the same for Teacher's Edition and a seller who also deals with international shipping.

My recommendation or suggestion is;

If you are a seller, please do international shipping as well.
If you are Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, then you should either publish e-book edition of Teacher's Edition and Assessment edition, so that
overseas, gook-ish,or geekish or Al Quaida, or any other strange looking or garlic smelling or slitty-eyed pan cake faced parent can download or order those essential books for the science education of their kids.

Who knows? One of these kids may grow up to become a genius biochemist or geneticist, and discover a way of extending American longevity by 100 years, or more realistically by a couple of decades.
