Louisiana is one of the first places in the world where soccer was played. Beginning as a game played by a working class immigrant population in the 1850s, soccer has a long and, until now, unappreciated history in Louisiana. The game migrated to the elite athletic clubs of New Orleans and Shreveport during the 1890s. By 1907, New Orleans boasted a professional soccer league that sent several players to the top professional leagues in Europe.
Large Hispanic and expat European communities kept the sport alive in Baton Rouge and New Orleans through the 1960s, when the sport became popular at the playground level. The following decades saw explosive growth at the club and high school levels, for both girls and boys, coinciding with the sport's rising statewide popularity. All the while, immigrant communities throughout Louisiana continued their love affair with the beautiful game.
Read as Scott Crawford weaves a fascinating story that brings together social, cultural, religious, and economic threads, whilst putting the local game in the context of national and international soccer and history. Players and fans of soccer and those interested in the history of Louisiana should not miss this riveting tale of a sport that predates all other team ball sports in the state.
A History of Soccer in Louisiana 18582013 eBook Scott Crawford
As Crawford says himself, this book represents fifteen years of research, but two weeks of organizing/writing. It is the only book I am aware of that goes into this much distant history of soccer in Louisiana, particularly in New Orleans, which is why I give it five stars. However, it starts to read like a list of things to maybe write more about later; certainly breadth over depth. Anyone interested in the history of New Orleans would find some fascinating information here. Often history focuses on the big events, but one can see a more intimate picture of New Orleans in some of these small events. For instance, the games the sailors would play. Anyone interested in soccer in America would also find this of interest, especially as he uncovers some very early history that is neglected in other books on the history of soccer in America or the world. It would be wonderful if he turned some of these tidbits of facts into more in-depth stories, maybe taking a book or two to do so, but until then, this is the book to get.Product details

A History of Soccer in Louisiana 18582013 eBook Scott Crawford Reviews
Crawford, once referred to as this generation's Hemingway, is at it again with this thrilling tale of adventure and danger in Caribbean soccer. After returning from a self-imposed exile in the homeland of Sean Connery and William Wallace to sharpen his writing wit, Crawford delivers the goods on every level imaginable with A History of Soccer in Louisiana. His writings are spruced with anecdotes so fruitful they would make Johnny Appleseed blush. Buy this book.
Our boys played soccer from early age. The background provided was extremely interesting. Our eldest son is also mentioned as a contributor.
