Anaphylaxis kept coming up as an Amazon medical thriller recommendation and I finally got around to checking it out. All in all, I enjoyed it, but I'm a medical thriller junkie. A valiant attempt of a first book from a doctor-turned-author! I enjoyed the medical explanations, the well-developed characters and the overall plot. Just when I thought it seemed obvious who-done-it, the plot took a turn in the last few pages, which I thought was rather contrived since there was no mention of the circumstances (no spoiler here - I won't say more) through the entire book. I'd be happy to read more from Dr. Wanderer i the future.Product details

Anaphylaxis A Medical Thriller Alan Anson Wanderer 9781478159438 Books Reviews
I'm a sucker for a good medical thriller, so I eagerly picked up ANAPHYLAXIS. It started out well, crisp and engrossing. Chapter 2 really caught my attention, and I eagerly settled in for a most excellent read. Unfortunately, it went downhill quite a bit after that, especially after the 2/3 mark.
I do like the protagonist. Lenny was someone to whom it was easy to relate. I found myself caring what happened to him, how he was going to solve his problems. When there was a degree of resolution about 2/3 of the way in, though, all literary tension dissipated.
The medical aspects seemed accurate with one exception. I am not an expert, but everything seemed "right" with regards to that. The one exception was the psychiatric scenes. I realize that the reader does not want to read an hour's worth of counseling, but people were in and out of the office in what would be mere minutes. I think the author needs to cover the time more effectively.
The courtroom scenes also played well, perhaps better than the medical.
Other parts were not as well done. The military descriptions were way off, for example, both in terminology and actions (e.g., there is no "bronze medal" but rather a Bronze Star Medal). The author went to great lengths to have physicians and lawyers read his manuscript (to his credit), so I was surprised he had no military, law enforcement, EMT, etc. personnel give him the same service.
Forgetting accuracy in the details, the actual writing was not up to the highest standards. Characterization was one dimensional. We had "bad" Italian mafia men, "bad" doctors out to make a buck and not bother with board certification, "bad" Christian fundamentalists (although who have a change-of heart), "bad" politicians who ride the moral bandwagon, "bad" hookers. There was very little subtlety or shades of grey in them. At times, they bordered on the cartoonish.
The coincidences in the book defied acceptable odds. It seemed that everyone was connected in some way or the other, going back years and years. While this could be accepted if this were a small town setting, in this case, we were dealing with large cities across the breadth of the nation.
One unbelievable scene had a medical technician, one who had worked for quite some time in the job, make an unbelievably stupid decision due to a lack of comprehension. A child would not make that mistake, much less someone who worked in the field.
This is a thriller. The "rules" of the genre are that hints need to be dropped as to "who done it," but we need to keep guessing until the reveal. There was no guessing in this one. The end was telegraphed quite early in the novel, and with each other possible suspect being slowly eliminated, continuing to read was like marching to bad news. Each step removed any hope that there was a twist that would surprise. When the reveal was made, instead of "wow!" it was more of a deflated balloon.
I got a laugh when one character expressed the whys as to his distaste for medical thrillers. Unfortunately, some of his reasons were exhibited in this book.
I understand and accept the the author worked hard to make a medical thriller that was accurate to the medical profession. In this area, I think the author succeeded. However, most textbooks are accurate. When delving into fiction, the writing, the plot construction, the wordsmithing--all of them have to work. A book cannot only be accurate it must be a good read.
I give this book three stars, so I don't think it is a bad book. It is worth a read. But I can't really place this book in the upper echelons of books I have read this year.
“Anaphylaxis A Medical Thriller” by Alan Anson Wanderer, was a good read, lots of twists and turns, fast paced, but I was disappointed in the ending…it was too abrupt. For a first time author, I think he did a very good job, it just needs tweaked a bit.
This book started out very interesting, especially to this retired allergist. It was well written, intense and fast paced. However it became a little unbelievable when another case of anaphylaxis popped up. Just a little too contrived for me. and the end was entirely unsatisfying. I might consider reading a second book by Mr Wanderer. His writing is good but he needs to work on his plots.
The plot develops as expected with an incident of anaphlaxis. But there is much more to the picture since the dying man was ready to release a drug to deal with cocaine addition. The same day all of the specifications and process information for this new drugs disappear from the company along with the chief laboratory technician. A voice mail message to that technician refers to a $50,000 payment. The deceased through his wife is related to the leading Senator in the state assembly who decides to start a campaign to reform malpractice awards. Through the malpractice litigation many more twists and turns occur. The question is raised of criminal aspects and another dimension is added to the mystery. The book kept me coming back until I finished. A very good read!
With a story that grabs your interest and makes you hold on with all the twists and turns of murder, deception, and infidelity. Great book, well written and well developed characters.
Pro medically accurate, good basic plot with subplots in parallel and coming together later, decent characters development, easy reading
Con characters tend to be one dimensional archetypes, occasionally hard to keep track of the side characters, things got predictable toward the end
Bottom line It's a good read, and I do recommend picking one up. I am in the health field so I am excited for this medical thriller. There are some adult themes so maybe not for kids.
I was looking for a novel to satisfy my appetite for a good medical suspense thriller & I was not disappointed. The story line is fast moving, it is filled with interesting twists and it is medically accurate. The author is a respected allergist/immunologist & his foray into writing fiction reflects tremendous talent as a nascent novelist. I look forward to reader his next thriller. This is a great read!
